little women is a novel published in 1868 and written by american author louisa may alcott. the story concerns the lives and loves of four sisters growing up during the american civil war. it was based on alcotts own experiences as a child in concord, massachusetts with her three sisters, anna, may, and elizabeth. little women is the story of the marches, a family used to hard toil and suffering. although father march is away with the union armies, the sisters meg, jo, amy and beth keep in high spirits with their mother, affectionately named marmee. their friendly gift of a christmas holiday breakfast to a neighbouring family is an act of generosity rewarded with wealthy mr. laurences gift of a surprise christmas feast. however, despite their efforts to be good, the girls show faults: the pretty meg becomes discontented with the children she teaches; boyish jo loses her temper regularly; while the golden-haired schoolgirl amy is inclined towards affectation. however, beth, who keeps the house is always kind and gentle. after certain happy times winning over the laurences, dark times arrive as marmee finds out about her husbands illness. worse is to come as beth contracts scarlet fever in her samaritan efforts for a sick neighbour and becomes more or lean invalid. the novel tells of their progreinto young womanhood with the additional strains of romance, beths terminal illness, the pressures of marriage and the outside world. this is the story of their growing maturity and wisdom and the search for the contentedneof family life. it was written in 1867 and is a fictionalised biography of alcott and her sisters. it has become a much loved classic tale and, while some of its issues seem outdated, many of the trials of the sisters are all too relevant today as evidenced by its continued following.

don quixote is the work of cervantes, a spanish writer in the 17th century.of course, this is a great work, because the characters described by the authorstill exist today.

man is the unity of spiritual substance. for don quixote, we will find himridiculous at the beginning. because what he did seemed so crazy. he seeshimself as a just man, a man who acts with chivalry and justice everywhere.however, the author let us see is such a character, but did not do one thingright. don quixote's starting point is good. he should follow the chivalryspirit and do what he thinks is right. he also led an honest farmer, sancho, tothe world with him. he rescues the children who are bound and fights for thosewho are in trouble. here we can't help but ask:

1. since don quixote is doing a good job, we can treat him as a good man.but why do we get tired of him when we think about the aftereffects of hiswork?

2. is there any madman like don quixote in reality?

3. in reality, what should we do when we encounter things that are unfairand do not conform to our own values?

let me first answer the first question. don quixote's spiritual quality isgood, but he does things regardless of the consequences, and only regardsreality as his fantasy tool of chivalry, which is very stupid and undesirable.blindly following the heroism of others will pay a heavy price.

let's answer the second question. these people still exist in reality. takesome famous people who dare to tell the truth. there is nothing wrong with theircourage to criticize the powerful and expose the darkness. but some people don'tview the reality of customers and criticize them, and finally they leave themarket bitterly.

the third question everyone has their own answers. but reason should be acriterion, and people should make correct decisions according to their actualsituation and the situation of the event. we should advocate heroism, but weshould base our actions on reason.

reason is the measure of emotion, reality is the reflection of spirit. in adiverse world, only by polishing your eyes can you do the right thing.

after read the african child

the african child was written by an african writer called camara laye, who gave me a different perspective about seeing the african children. it is really a book which is worth reading although it do not belong to the best-sellers or the newest publication. it is just a book written in a very long time ago by a not that famous writer, but you’ll find it fantastic or you will finally get something after read the book.

now let’s see the details. the african child is a book collected by collins english library, and the library graded it with level 4. the level represents a text written within a basic vocabulary of 500 words and appropriate structures, 2:1000 words, 3:2000 words, 4:3000 words, 5:5000 words. the collins english library series are written for students of english as a second or foreign language and for reluctant native readers. the african child only contains 12 chapters, but for me, it’s the perfect, because i cannot read that much words in a short time by my reading speed, i know i have to do with my reading.

at the beginning of the book, there is a short passage written for the writer’s mother to express the writer’s thanks towards his great mother, and also, to appreciate the women of africa. then comes the story. it is a true story about the author himself became a man, and finally left his hometown and family. during the reading process, i find something interesting and touching. i used to misunderstood that all the african family are living a poor and unhappy life, and the woman here has little importance in their society. now i know that not everything is so absolute. the author tells us that some people may hold this view for many years, but africa is huge, with many different ways of life, and in their country the woman has considerable freedom and power. in his hometown, his mother was respected and admired greatly not only for her strong mind, but also her strange powers. he really had a mother with fantastic powers just like magic. in the book, it seems just many of them have magic, his father’s black guiding snake which guided him to do the right thing, and led him to the way of success. and also, his mother’s power to make animals come to life, the mystical ‘sema’ or medicine man, and marabouts who have a magic power to make wishes come true or can predict future just like a wizard. in the beginning of the book, i saw that those african boys did not live a hard time. instead, they were happy almost every day, they loved wild animals, and the wild animals like snakes never hurt them, snakes are thought to be good friends and tutor to them. in a certain time, the author would go to visit his grandmother who lived in countryside. here everybody knew everybody else, they know almost everything about each other, and each other’s secrets, but they were very considerate to each other in a country manner. here we can see that country manners do not mean rough manners, people are more polite in the country than in the town. they have more time, and the way of life is simpler in the country, but there are accepted rules. although everyone knows everything about everyone else’s lives, they are always very careful about each other’s personal freedom. and if their minds seem to work more slowly in the country, it is because speech is a serious matter. they always think careful before speaking. here author spent a very happy time. he enjoyed the activity of cutting rice with adult and partners just as young as he is, he liked the sound of drum while cutting rice, and he loved to keep the birds away from their rice on the ground. he could swim in the river with others freely, and climb trees as he want even though his clothes would be torn. he was not afraid of that here, he had a grandma who would mend it without complain. she loved her grandson.

but life is not happy all the time; there surely will be some hard time to spend. as the author went to school, old boys always hit the younger students, took their food and money away, but the young was too afraid to tell their fathers. finally one day, hungry and hurt, one of the younger students dared to tell all about it to his father, one of the most famous people in the town, so the problem was solved, and the younger students was lived in a happy life ever after.

time flies, here came the day of boys becoming men. they would experience the circumcision. the process is hurt, but it’s the price of becoming a man. all the boys behaved very bravely that they never cried out under the almost unbearable pain. they were the african children!,

in the end, i want to say that although there are some strange customs in africa, i do changed my view on the african lives. maybe they do not as wealthy as the europeans, but they are living a happy life too, just like the author said, africa is huge, there’s different ways of life. now i see africa as a place full of love, care, magic and natural life.

thoughts given by sherlock holmes and the duke’s son

written in the first chapter of the book pride and prejudice is an extraordinary sentence of which even a person who has had only a brief look upon the book will not fail to receive a deep impression-it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. in terms of sherlock holmes, we’d better alter the sentence into “it is a fact universally accepted by readers throughout the world that an excellent book in possession of our famous detective sherlock holmes is undoubtedly a masterpiece of all times.” perhaps this is one of the most obvious explanations for the unrivaled popularity of “holmes series” in the field of detective stories. overwhelmed by the recommendations provided by my friends, i decided to take a look on this sherlock holmes and the duke’s son originally published by oxford university press.

as a whole, this book is about a case concerning the duke’s missing son. arthur, the duke’s son, was found out in a certain morning to have disappeared, accompanied with which was also the disappearance of the german teacher. the school master dr. huxtable then turned to the famous detective of the time sherlock holmes for help. realizing how tough and important the case is, holmes immediately made up his mind to accept the case and followed dr. huxtable back to mackleton by train. having formed a rough idea about the whole matter, holmes probed into the case immediately and had a careful investigation of the entire area shortly after the arrival, during the process of which he discovered the body of the german teacher heidegger. finally, primarily due to his prominent ability as a detective, he managed to unravel the mystery and obtained the twelve thousand pounds promised by the duke.

having once started reading this fiction, i was completely immersed in the mysterious story presented by the book. as the saying goes, “well begun, half done”. at the beginning of the story, just like many other detective stories, the author gives us a brief description of the condition by the words of a client. however, unlike other ones, this story first delineates the client’s strange behavior at length to indicate the severity of the incident in order to attract the readers to continue reading it. as is known to all, vivid depiction is essential to detective stories since it can help the readers understand each figure’s characteristics and visualize the scenes, thus making the story more authentic and attractive. therefore, trying to present a “real world” to his readership, sir arthur conan doyle, author of the original “holmes series”, has skillfully arranged the plots of the whole story from the perspective of dr. watson, a character not so specialized in discovering the truth hidden behind the enigmatic happenings as holmes but so loyal to sherlock homes as a friend that he always accompanies holmes wherever he goes. in this way, he elaborately depicted every scene and character in the book, apart from the special start, the ending of the whole story, being dramatic but reasonable, is certainly an outstanding one. after all, except the author himself, who knows that the duke’s seemingly ordinary secretary is in fact the duke’s bastard? in addition, who knows that the duke actually has already been acquainted with the whole thing before holmes solves this complicated problem? yet, surprising as it is, this ending seems so natural that it fits all the plots of the story perfectly well. while enjoying this wonderful story, i could do nothing but admire the wonderful design of this masterpiece as well as the author’s gorgeous writing skill. closing my eyes, i can even “see” the story happening just like watching a film. not until then did i understand why the japanese cartoon film detective conan used this “conan” as the name of its hero.

as far as i am concerned, nothing is more admirable and surprising in the hero sherlock homes than his profound knowledge which has certainly assisted him a lot when he was studying the case. take the bicycle tyres for instance, holmes actually is capable of recognizing 42 different varieties of bicycle tyres. what’s more, according to his other stories, holmes has studied different kinds of newspapers, cigarettes, people’s footprints and other special things as well. therefore, he seems to have the mastery of anything relevant to the cases he deals with. except for his illimitable knowledge, holmes also specializes in arranging the facts in order and then finding the fact leading him to a great discovery or even the truth itself. from his speaking “every mystery has an answer”, we can readily shape the impression of a man with great intelligence and inflexible will. in this case, after getting rid of unrelated facts, sherlock homes eventually grasped the clue and discovered the amazing fact.

the old man and the sea is one of hemingway’s most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. it played a great part in his winning the pulizer prize in 1953 and the 1954 novel prize for literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. besides the old man and the sea, i have read some of his other works, such as the sun also rises, a farewell to arms and the snow of kilimanijaro. but the old man and the sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.

this novel mainly wrote one old person alone in marine fishes. he fished one big fish, tied up the fish head and the upper part of the body side the boat above. but he met the shark fish, the old person causes all one's skill and the shark fish fight, the shark fish the fish flesh which could eat all eats finished also has about 800 pounds.

this book promulgates the truth, not showed the person how regardleof, most feared is does not have the confidence. the confidence is just like is the automobile motor, is power which the person goes forward.

i first read this book when i was in my fifteens. and now i remember it just as well as if i had read it yesterday.
